Boutonnières were worn frequently in the past and reserved for special occasions such as weddings, funerals, and proms etc, whereas now days a boutonnière is worn more often to add some colour to a smart/ casual outfit.
More seen now as a country dress code for the shooting and country enthusiast to add a splash of colour to tweed attire.
